SUMMARY:Musical Feast: A Ramble in the Ramble
DESCRIPTION:A Hike in Historical Woods\nGet away on a Sunday afternoon to experience the peace and beauty of The Ramble\, a Biltmore Farms Community only ten minutes from downtown Asheville. Drive through the gates into a grand forest and hear a symphony of birdsong. \nThe tall windows of Living Well Center seem to bring in the surrounding forest. Here guests will receive a complimentary book on the history of Biltmore Farms’ forestry and dairying and enjoy a delicious\, healthy buffet feast accompanied by lemonade\, iced tea\, assorted waters\, and scrumptious desserts while relaxing with background music of Classical Romance piano. \nFollowing lunch\, take in a short video and a presentation on the history of the Ramble\, an area once part of George Vanderbilt’s estate and then be treated to a delightful clarinet performance by Aaron Lipsky.  A native of Asheville\, Aaron has soloed with The Asheville Clarinet Choir\, played in The Brevard Concert Orchestra\, is a Brevard Music Center Scholar and performs with numerous bands including The Asheville Symphony Youth Orchestra\, placing second in the 2017 Asheville Symphony Concerto Competition. \nFinally\, proceed on an easy hike led by Ramble residents\, Jon Lawrie and Rose Rose\, on the paved\, wooded\, meandering trails along Dingle Creek. Catch a glimpse of wildlife and observe key landmarks along the way on trails on which George Vanderbilt and his Landscape Architect Fredrick Law Olmsted “rambled” and rode carriages over a hundred years ago. \nThere will be trail snacks and bottled water; door prizes go to lucky winners. Don’t miss this unique Musical Feast!

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: Trails\, Trees and Trilliums
DESCRIPTION:Join us on what has become an annual event – a Musical Feast Nature Hike. Naturalists\, Marilyn Kolton and Lou Dwarshuis\, generously offer\, once again\, to lead a hike along a beautiful\, scenic trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway. \nWe begin at the Pisgah Inn and hike through a rich botanic area of Mountain Laurel\, weather-buffeted Chestnut Oak and American Holly. The hike continues along the mountainside where the path overlooks the distant peaks and valleys. Expect to see twenty or more species of spring wildflowers in bloom including the rare Rosy Twisted Stalk and Painted Trillium. A wildflower checklist will be provided; let’s see how many you can find! \nA little side-trip brings you to the Mount Pisgah picnic area where you’ll feast on a splendid picnic provided by your hosts. Rest and indulge and then it’s back to the Pisgah Inn along a trail where you might see more Painted Trillium and an endangered American Chestnut tree. \nThe path is a mostly level\, non-strenuous trail so lace up your boots\, wear comfortable light-weight layers and don’t forget your hiking stick and extra water. Certainly\, if your interests run to photography\, bring your camera; there are always interesting – sometimes surprising – sightings on Musical Feast hikes! Come and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature thanks to our intrepid guides\, Marilyn and Lou. \nMeet in the parking lot of Ingles across from Biltmore Plaza on Brevard Road

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: Give My Regards to Broadway
DESCRIPTION:Always wanted to be in a Broadway musical\, but were too afraid to audition? Here’s your chance to channel your inner Julie Andrews or Alfred Drake. Enthusiasm is all that is required. (Remember Ethel Merman?) Part singing is welcome\, of course\, if you are so inclined. \nThe evening will start off with a “Getting to Know You” activity followed by a New York Deli spread to include corned beef\, pastrami\, sauerkraut\, cole slaw\, potato salad\, egg salad\, lox\, bagels\, schmear\, kosher dills\, and rye bread. Of course\, celery\, soda\, beer and wine go along with this cold buffet. \nAfter supper\, we sing favorite tunes from popular musicals that we all know and love\, such as “My Fair Lady” and “South Pacific”. Accompanying us on the piano will be our hostess\, Mary Johnson. \nFollowing the sing-along\, you will be treated to several kinds of cheesecakes\, including one that won the “New York Magazine” competition several years ago.\nSo\, warm up your vocal chords and enjoy Broadway right here in North Asheville.

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: Blue Ridge Bounty
DESCRIPTION:A Spring Mountain Stroll\, a bit of Blue Ridge History and a Sumptuous Dinner\nCome to Jump Cove for a spring mountain stroll in the woods\, a fascinating history lesson about the Blue Ridge Parkway – “America’s Most Scenic Highway” – and enjoy appetizers and dinner at Gary and BA Schenk’s lovely mountain home. \nIf you’d like to hike\, arrive at 3:30 pm for a short one-and-a-half-mile hike on trails the Schenks have built through their mountain acreage. Or relax on the patio with a drink and enjoy the gardens while others hike. (Interestingly\, this area is rumored to have been inhabited by moonshiners during Prohibition. The springs still abound and rusty drums and spring boxes still lie in the woods\, reminders of that rebellious time.) \nAfter the hike\, appetizers and drinks will be served on the beautiful\, streamside patio. Here on a property that backs up to the Blue Ridge Parkway you will sit surrounded by extensive gardens and rock walls put in by Gary and BA. And here\, fittingly\, George Luther will present a short talk on the history of the Parkway\, its development\, and all that it has to offer. \nGeorge was an Interpretive Park Ranger with the National Park Service for eleven years. Now a resident of Asheville\, he worked in national parks all over the country\, has been an instructor with Outward Bound and is currently employed with the North Carolina Outward Bound Program. George now operates his own Back Country Guided Hiking Service focusing on hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway. \nIf you prefer to skip the hike\, come at 5:00 pm and enjoy the food\, drink and Parkway lore. Dinner will be an array of delectable treats prepared by your hosts. Join fellow Feasters for an afternoon/evening filled with information\, natural beauty\, and delicious food. It will be an event you won’t want to miss!

SUMMARY:Music\, Art and a bit of Vanderbilt Lore - The Episcopal Cathedral of All Souls
DESCRIPTION:This Musical Feast has it all: classical and contemporary music performed by talented Kyle Ritter\, Alicia Chapman\, Frances Duff and Lea Kibler\, in the art-filled sanctuary of  The Episcopal Cathedral of All Souls.  Built in 1896 as the home church of the Vanderbilt family\, it is famous for its architecture and vibrantly colorful windows.  Tasty food\, wine and delectable desserts in the Parish Hall\, decorated with beautiful paintings by University of North Carolina at Asheville faculty member\, Tucker Cooke\, round out this multicultural event. \nKyle Ritter\, All Souls organist and music director since 2002\, will present a concert of trio sonatas by two German Baroque composers\, Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann\, as well as contemporary works for instrument and organ. We will be joined by Asheville Symphony musicians Alicia Chapman (oboe) and Frances Duff (cello).  Lea Kibler\, a member of the All Souls Adult Choir\, will play flute. Kyle Ritter plays and conducts for the Cathedral’s three Sunday services and directs a 50-member adult choir and two children’s choirs. He also serves as Assistant Director/Accompanist for the Asheville Symphony Chorus.  \nThe fascinating history of the Episcopal Cathedral of All Souls\, will be revealed by Martha Fullington\, coordinator of the docent program at All Souls. Martha is an architectural historian whose career was with the State Preservation Offices of both North and South Carolina. She will share some history highlights and cast aside a few myths.
