DESCRIPTION:Darko Butorac\, conductorJakob Aumiller\, piano \n\n\n\nWhat does genius look like? Often it looks like community. Brahms crafted his exuberant First Piano Concerto through years of collaboration with close friends and mentors\, including Clara Schumann who inspired the concerto’s dreamy second movement. Beethoven’s relentless Seventh Symphony — a personal favorite of his with its unyielding rhythmic drive — premiered at a charity concert performed by an orchestra of friends and fellow composers. SUMMARY:The Magic of Moog
DESCRIPTION:Join us at a truly unique Musical Feast\, as we have a conversation with guest artist Inna Faliks\, who will be playing a Minimoog in the November Masterworks program\, “Double Take.” \n\n\n\nThe Feast\, at Howard and Honey Solomon’s beautiful home in North Asheville\, will feature great food and wine along with a Q&A with Inna\, a nationally known pianist\, educator and author who is the Professor of Piano and Head of Piano at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.  \n\n\n\nInna will talk about the Minimoog\, how it compares to the piano\, and about the pieces she will be playing that weekend. Masterworks 3 is all about surprising musical intersections: As one example\, the Symphony and Inna will play a piece by Gabriel Prokofiev that’s the first-ever concerto for the Minimoog. \n\n\n\nThe Feast and Masterworks concert are fitting in Asheville\, the birthplace of the Moog. We expect an evening filled with old and new friends\, with every dollar raised going straight to the Symphony. Please join us! \n\n\n\nCo-hosts:  Clair Griffith & Geoff Mitchell\, Kathryn Long & Axel Graumann. \n\n\n\nSuggested attire: Casual

DESCRIPTION:Darko Butorac\, conductorInna Faliks\, minimoog  \n\n\n\nSome moments demand a double take: Romeo catching sight of Juliet across a crowded ballroom\, a synthesizer taking the stage where the piano should be. Sergei Prokofiev conjures Shakespeare’s star-crossed tragedy in all its beauty and brutality — forbidden love\, violent delights\, and violent ends. Grandson Gabriel Prokofiev offers his own unlikely pairing with the first-ever concerto for Asheville’s own Minimoog\, where acid house collides with the classical and shattering convention becomes a family tradition. \n\n\n\nKabalevsky: Overture from Colas BreugnonGabriel Prokofiev: Concerto for Minimoog Synthesizer and OrchestraSergei Prokofiev: Romeo & Juliet Suite

SUMMARY:Masterworks 4: London
DESCRIPTION:Darko Butorac\, conductorZlatomir Fung\, cello \n\n\n\nThis program honors the British talent for holding gravity and levity in the same hand. Britten opens with melodies from his childhood\, reimagined years later. Shostakovich’s cello concerto follows with biting intensity — lyrical\, ruthless\, and unapologetically demanding. Pärt offers an austere meditation on loss\, inspired by the “unusual purity” of Britten’s music. Haydn closes with his final symphony\, composed in London\, ending not in sentiment\, but in triumphant joy. Four composers\, four sharply different voices\, united by the British knack for making contradictions feel perfectly sensible. \n\n\n\nBritten: Simple SymphonyShostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1Pärt: Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin BrittenHaydn: Symphony No. 104\, “London”

SUMMARY:Masterworks 6: Marquee
DESCRIPTION:Darko Butorac\, conductorAaron Diehl\, piano \n\n\n\nNew York isn’t just the setting\, it’s a main character. Experience 1930s and 40s Manhattan through music that moves like the city itself: brassy\, fast-talking\, tender when it counts\, and always on the move. Gershwin’s concerto for piano swings between Charleston rhythm and back-alley blues\, while On the Town embodies subway rush\, park-bench hush\, and Times Square buzz. Gypsy lifts the curtain\, and Porgy & Bess — a defining American work rooted in Black musical tradition — brings the program home\, showcasing Broadway in its prime: glamour and grit\, lights blazing\, and the city wide awake. \n\n\n\nStyne: Overture from GypsyGershwin: Concerto in F for Piano and OrchestraBernstein: Three Dance Episodes from On the TownGershwin: Symphonic Picture from Porgy & Bess
