SUMMARY:Musical Feast: The Magic Flute\, an Encore
DESCRIPTION:Return to the Golden Age of Elegance and enjoy an intimate dinner in a wonderfully restored part of downtown Asheville’s past – The Aston. Your hosts Ann and Jon Kemske welcome you to their charming condo and offer drinks and appetizers with lovely music from the “magic” flute of Dilshad Posnock of the Asheville Symphony. \nLocated in the church district\, surrounded by beautiful old trees\, the Aston\, built in 1928 was intended to be “Asheville’s most grand apartment building” but was never finished quite up to the original intent. Today in this quiet setting\, you visit with the fortunate owner of one of the thirteen garden apartments. Their home is filled with lovely and unique art as well as a large collection of local art. \nDinner will be a sumptuous multi-course meal\, with wine pairings\, prepared and served by your hosts. Ann\, classically trained in France as a master chef\, and Jon\, a creative engineer\, have more than fifty years combined experience in the food business and will delight your taste buds and visual senses with their efforts. \nThe exquisite table setting is artistically gorgeous – the Rosenthal Studio china portraying scenes from Mozart’s “Magic Flute” in gold relief is a collection Ann started when she was a teen-ager. \nThis lovely venue\, the cuisine\, the music and the gracious hosts make this a perfect kick-off for this year’s Amadeus Festival!

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: Eat Your Art Out
DESCRIPTION:Join us for dinner in the warm atmosphere of Blue Spiral 1 Gallery. John Cram\, a leader in Asheville’s downtown Renaissance\, recognized the need for a premier showcase for artists and crafts people in the heart of the city. His vision has proved to be prescient. John and his team – Michael Maness\, Director\, and Ali Whitman\, Marketing Coordinator will be on hand to introduce the features of the gallery and the wide range of art that is offered for sale. \nWith an ever-changing display of featured artists throughout the year\, January’s selection promises to be a high quality visual experience. You will be treated to cocktails\, wine\, beer and appetizers to the music of symphony favorite Franklin Keel and his cello. Then\, surrounded by the gallery ambience\, you will be seated at round tables for an opulent dining experience created by one of Asheville’s fine local chefs. Following dinner\, Keel will be accompanied by the three other members of his band Upland Drive performing on guitar\, cello\, bass and drums with vocals by Keel and Debra Hass. \nThis Musical Feast brings you a unique art-focused dining experience\, complete with table prizes and\, of course\, music! Join us and be a part of this memorable scene.

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: Celtic Caprice
DESCRIPTION:For a terrific winter’s-day diversion\, we offer an enchanting house concert with a whimsical twist. Come to the McLellan’s home in Kenilworth for lunch\, be swept away with the music of the Celtic harp and\, just for fun\, a demonstration of “Fairy Hair”. \nFor the occasion\, award-winning Celtic harpist\, Sue Richards\, will offer a concert of traditional Celtic music. Sue is an internationally known performer\, teacher\, composer and author\, recording CD’s and entertaining audiences throughout the United States and Europe. \nShe has won the American National Harp championship four times and is now a Scottish Harp Society of America Distinguished Judge. \nBegin the event with Prosecco and appetizers after which you will be enchanted by the sweet sound of the Celtic harp as Sue performs. \nAfter the concert\, sit down to a generous luncheon of quiche\, soup and fresh fruit. And for dessert\, indulge your sweet-tooth with chocolate torte topped with raspberry coulis and whipped cream! \nTo further enhance the affair\, Linda Roberts of Studio 70 will demonstrate the technique of applying hair tinsel and its effects. Some lucky party-goers will have the option of being one of the ladies so adorned (at a nominal price). Others may wish to arrange a “do” at her studio. \nThis unique party is of a piece with Musical Feast fare – great food\, delightful venue and beautiful music with a fanciful touch.

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: Chip Reflects on “Rhapsody”
DESCRIPTION:Chip Kaufman is back by popular demand and just in time to entertain you about George Gershwin\, one of the composers featured in the upcoming Masterworks concert. If you don’t already know Chip from his work at WCQS\, from his informative Symphony Talks and from “Behind the Notes”\, here is a great opportunity to become acquainted with his vast knowledge of music and his ready wit. \nThis event will focus on the film\, “Rhapsody in Blue”\, which was released in June\, 1945. It stars Robert Alda as George Gershwin and Oscar Levant as himself. The movie also features Joan Leslie\, Alexis Smith and Charles Coburn. It received two Academy Award nominations: Best Sound Recording (Nathan Levinson) and Best Musical Scoring (Ray Heindorf and Max Steiner). The film has been called\, “A monumental collection of nonsense”. But\, is it? Chip will set the record straight for us. \nPosana\, a restaurant on historic Pack Square downtown\, is one of the latest established by Executive Chef\, Peter Pollay\, and his wife\, Martha. Having formed the Mandara Hospitality Group\, Peter and Martha are involved in the explosion of new establishments catering to Asheville’s burgeoning tourist trade. \nThe restaurant specializes in high-quality foods in an excellent atmosphere with farm-to-table options that appeal to the Asheville taste. At this Feast\, you’ll be offered choices from Posana’s elegant heavy hors d’oeuvres menu and a chance to relax with a glass of red or white wine. \nThis promises to be a fun evening with delicious food and more wonderful insights into the life of George Gershwin.

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: Historic Riverside Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in a unique journey into Asheville’s past? An event that offers insight into the cultural diversity\, architecture\, religious customs and landscape design of our beloved city? Historic Riverside Cemetery is the answer! \nFounded August 4\, 1885 as a garden-style cemetery and public park\, the cemetery offers all of that and more. Gary Clark of “Tours by Clark” will lead us on a one-hour walking tour of the premises and tell us about some of the “residents”\, some history\, a few fun stories and just a bit of spook (it’s Halloween\, after all!) It promises to be a very interesting adventure. \nThomas Wolfe and O. Henry are only two luminaries from Asheville’s past to be buried here. There’s much more to be learned about others – some famous and others notable for their unusual or strange stories. \nFollowing our tour\, we will gather for lunch at Nine Mile restaurant\, 233 Montford Avenue where you will have your choice of options from their delicious menu. \nWith eighty-seven acres of landscaped grounds\, Riverside Cemetery is indeed a garden of extraordinary beauty not to be overlooked on any tour of the city. Bring your camera.

DESCRIPTION:Coming up in September\, Musical Feasts offers an event that embodies everything Asheville – unique craftsmanship\, traditional local cuisine\, ecological awareness and a classy informality. \nInternationally acclaimed furniture designer\, Brian Boggs\, designs and builds fine wood furniture\, continuing a thirty-five-year career. He and his team handcraft heirloom-quality furniture – one piece at a time – with a focus on design\, craftsmanship and sustainability. According to Brian\, “I design furniture with an intention to preserve a tree’s integrity in honor of human comfort that will be celebrated for generations.” A journeyman philosopher of the first order! \nLunch will be a Southern-style picnic in Carrier Park. Your hosts plan a lunch of boneless chicken wings\, a fruit and berry tray\, potato salad\, tomato and cucumber salad\, deviled eggs\, chicken salad croissants\, iced tea and lemonade. Yum… \nAfter lunch watch Brian and his team at work and experience original craftsmanship with a human touch.
