SUMMARY:Musical Feast: An Old Fashioned Christmas Feast
DESCRIPTION:Back by request\, we present an old fashioned Christmas gathering reminiscent of times gone by. Christmas was a time when families and friends gathered around the fireplace sharing the warm holiday atmosphere\, reminiscing\, caroling\, and enjoying a warm evening together. \nThis year\, come enjoy a festive evening at the Schenk’s beautiful mountain home\, decorated for the holidays (private address will be sent to attendees via email). We will celebrate the season in style. Enjoy a cheery glass of wine or wassail\, and other holiday beverages\, as you indulge in a sumptuous Christmas buffet of seasonal treats. \nThen\, gather around the piano as we join together in singing some of our favorite songs\, such as “Chestnuts Roasting by an Open Fire”\, or “White Christmas”. Here’s your chance to shine! \nThis holiday\, treat yourself to a break from your own hectic planning\, and enjoy a cozy evening with friends amidst the bountiful delights of the season.

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: A Wedding Feast from India
DESCRIPTION:Charlotte Caplan has been enjoying Indian food since her childhood in London. When she moved to the Carolinas and married Mike Brubaker\, who plays the French horn in the Asheville Symphony\, she found that there were very few Indian restaurants in town. So she made a specialty of learning to cook the delightful and endlessly varied Indian dishes she loves. \nLast summer their son\, Sam\, married an Indian girl\, Elina Thomas\, and Charlotte and Mike were delighted to organize their wedding feast. Now you are invited to participate in some of that culinary magic with this Musical Feast. \nThe party will be held at the Caplan-Brubaker home in Montford (address will be provided to attendees via email). Their house was built in 1915 in the Arts and Crafts style for prominent Asheville merchant Gustav Lichtenfels and his wife Edna Long Lichtenfels (a niece of Moses Cone.) It is believed to be one of many Asheville homes designed by Richard Sharp Smith\, another English native\, who was the resident architect for the Biltmore estate. \nThe wedding feast\, a sit-down dinner\, will include a variety of Indian dishes\, from appetizers to main dishes and desserts\, of the type that might be served at a festive Indian wedding (and will include vegetarian\, vegan and gluten-free options.) The dishes will all be homemade from scratch by Charlotte Caplan and Ellen Nutter and the feast will be accompanied by relevant music selected by Mike. \nCome to Montford and enjoy this Musical Feast – an exotic Indian Wedding Feast!

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: Golden Grove
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Edwin Wiley Grove is known as the Father of Modern Asheville? The Grove Park Inn is a familiar landmark but what do you know of its origins? Learn all about the rich history of the Grove Park Inn on this Musical Feast tour.* The building is unique in its architecture but there is much to be learned – the details of the construction\, its arts and crafts-style furniture\, the history of the early years and the lore concerning its many notable guests. \nAfter the forty-five-minute tour\, you are invited to dine in the outdoor garden (weather permitting) of the Golden Fleece\, located directly behind the Inn at 111 Grovewood Rd. There you will be offered a choice of tasty items from their menu – salads and an assortment of sandwiches (hint: the lamb is exquisite!) \nFollowing lunch there will be time to explore the Grovewood Village next door and its shops and museums. The Grovewood Gallery offers local arts and crafts including pottery\, woodworking\, clothing and sculptures. Or perhaps you would prefer to explore the antique car museum or learn about Biltmore Industries founded in 1901 by Edith Vanderbilt and two inspired teachers. Both museums are open until 5:30 each afternoon. \nFor those of you who continue to be intrigued by the story of Asheville’s early years\, this is a tour not to be missed! \n*Please note that the tour of the Grove Park Inn is a walking tour and requires periods of standing. There is one set of stairs\, however an elevator is available if needed.

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: Fall for Crafters Four
DESCRIPTION:Come spend a fine fall afternoon in Black Mountain in the woodworking studio of Allen Arcand where Allen has gathered together a group of highly respected artists to demonstrate and share their love of fine craft. \nBegin the visit with a glass of wine or beer and appetizers. Then\, at your leisure\, wander the studio and learn what each artist does and how he/she goes about it. \nAllen started wood-working as a hobby to build items for his family but ultimately realized that it had become a calling\, as it were\, and decided to use his God-given talent to build furniture as a career. Wait till you see what he has done to transform the kitchen of their 1950’s-era cottage. \nFred works in various media – wood\, clay\, original designs in wood combined with metal objects\, glass\, electronic components and so on. Particular specialties are his wooden greeting cards and whimsical caricatures painted on some of his wood creations. \nJanet began her artistic career as a costumer for the opera but soon developed a special interest in jewelry design and construction. While opera remains an interest\, it is in the past and jewelry design has become her true passion. \nJim\, after a career as an engineer\, discovered ceramic art and sculpting. Deriving inspiration from nature\, his art is as diverse as the world around him. But you must come see for yourself. \nWhen the studio tours are over\, enjoy the fall foliage and mingle with fellow art lovers as the sun goes down. Weather permitting\, you will dine alfresco in the pergola warmed by a fire in the fire pit – French onion soup\, followed by pork tenderloin in fig sauce with a medley of fall roasted vegetables. Dessert will be warm apple crisp with ice cream\, prepared and served by “McGills Homemade Caterer.” A lovely ending to a very interesting day!

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: All Things Bright and Beautiful
DESCRIPTION:Asheville’s annual Quilt Show at the Agricultural Center is titled “All Things Bright and Beautiful” with good reason! These colorful and artistic quilts are created and produced by people from all over the country. Men as well as women have an interest in\, and love for\, this timeless art form and your hosts\, nationally known Georgia Bonesteel and Judy Simmons\, invite you to spend an enjoyable afternoon learning all about it. \nBegin your day in Biltmore Park (private address will be sent to attendees via email) in a home filled with quilts and enjoy a lunch consisting of a variety of salads\, little bites and desserts. Here you will have the opportunity to visit a quilter’s work area that features her fabric stash\, design wall and quilting tools. \nThen drive to the WNC Agricultural Center (1301 Fanning Bridge Rd\, Fletcher\, NC 28731) where you will be greeted by Asheville Quilt Guild members\, avid quilters all\, who will lead a guided tour of the exhibit floor. This year’s entries\, which have been professionally judged\, are on display and highlighted in different categories. You will learn all about the quilting process and the fascinating construction of the quilted masterpieces. \nIn the course of the tour and afterwards\, you will have time to see all the exhibits\, shop for handmade items in the Gift Shop and Gallery and visit with the many vendors. Come with your friends to the Feast and spend as much time as you choose at this unique exhibition.

SUMMARY:Musical Feast: A Farm Feast Like No Other
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to visit an unusual farm\, unusual because it’s also the home and studio of a glass-blower and because your dinner is South African-inspired! As well\, you’ll be surprised by this beautiful site – it commands views of the river and the majestic mountains and it’s only twelve minutes from downtown Asheville! \nScott Paly and his wife\, Karen\, (a native of South Africa\,) welcome guests through the gated drive leading up to their stunning entrance. Walk across a bridge to the front door. Inside\, you’ll find that the décor is hand-crafted with an artistic eye to include furniture glass and objets d’art created by Scott as well as by other artisans. \nDrinks and appetizers will be served on the patio next to the “studio” just a few steps from the house. This is a building\, functional in the extreme – it doubles as a storage structure for the farm and also as a studio for Scott’s creativity. Of course\, we’ve allowed time to watch a demonstration of Scott’s glass-blowing prowess and to question him about his art. \nLater\, on our way to dinner\, we’ll visit the picturesque Scottish Highland cattle grazing nearby. You may be interested in seeing the chickens and sheep too. \nThe buffet dinner will include Karen’s “Spice Kitchen” recipes for Butter Chicken as well as Bobotie\, a traditional South African dish served over rice with accompanying sambals or side dishes\, a salad and naan bread. You can expect delicious desserts as well. \nGorgeous glass\, designer cows\, and South African bobotie – this Feast has it all! When you reluctantly leave your delightful hosts at the end of your visit\, there should be enough daylight left for you to enjoy once more the bucolic scenery as you wend your way home.
