SUMMARY:A Walk on the Wild Side
DESCRIPTION:Join us for one of the best hikes in North Carolina’s Pisgah Forest! A gentle\, mostly level loop trail of 3 miles will introduce you to the wonders of rare mountain bogs\, beautiful mature forest canopies\, and fern-filled woods. We may even see a touch of fall color! Our knowledgeable tour guide\, George Luther\, was a National Park Ranger for 11 years in the most visited U. S. National Parks. He will explain how beaver dams along the South Fork Mills River created these unusual mountain bogs with distinct plants and wildlife. George and Edith Vanderbilt created their “Cradle of Forestry” school here\, which is now a heritage site. It was the first to introduce modern forestry management techniques in the country. We will learn the history of how the Vanderbilt family of Biltmore House in Asheville helped create the Pisgah National Forest\, one of the nation’s best outdoor recreation playgrounds. \nThis area is also known as the “pink beds\,” because of the dense rhododendron and mountain laurel thickets that bloom every spring. Some thickets still remain in this beautiful\, shade forest. \nWe will start off early (8:30 – 9:00 am) at the picnic area with a light snack of juice and pastries. Water will be provided for all hikers during our leisurely walk. \nAfter the hike\, we will enjoy a delicious lunch of salads\, cold cuts\, cheeses\, fruit\, dessert\, beverages\, wine and beer at our covered\, private picnic shelter. There are full-service restrooms there. Special treat: Ben Warner\, a Guild member\, will provide musical selections on his 7-string classical guitar. \nThis event covers the best of the peaceful\, natural world with fascinating history and the company of other music lovers!

SUMMARY:Bat Cave and Nature Conservancy Spring Wildflower Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come take a Spring hike among the wildflowers with our experts\, learn about how the Nature Conservancy has preserved the land around Bat Cave\, and enjoy a delicious picnic lunch on the shores of Lake Lure. Bat Cave\, near Lake Lure\, is not generally open to the public in order to protect the endangered species that live there. The Nature Conservancy\, who bought the property to protect this pristine habitat\, will take us on this special\, exclusive hike there.  \nThe morning will start with pastries and beverages while enjoying a short talk on the biological importance of the area.  In addition to a fantastic array of wildflowers and birds\, the Bat Cave Preserve is home to the largest augen gneiss granite fissure cave in the world.  The granite of these caves was formed over 500 million years ago\, and the cave provides habitat for rare bats\, salamanders\, and spiders.  \nThe hike is 1.5 miles round-trip\, and there will be a lot to see and explore with expert guides Marilyn Kolton and Lou Dwarshius and Nature Conservancy biologist Megan Sutton.  The hike is along a partly rocky path with some elevation changes and is considered easy to moderate in difficulty.  \nAfter our hike\, we’ll take the short drive to Lake Lure to picnic on the shores of the lake. You’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and spectacular views of the lake and Rumbling Bald Mountain. After lunch you can walk the beautiful paths of Morse Park along Lake Lure or rent paddle boats\, or even take a boat tour of the Lake. \nLOCATIONS: Bat Cave Apple House\, 400 Lake Lure Highway\, Bat Cave\,NC; Lunch at Lake Lure – Morse Park\, [Picnic area] 2948 Memorial Highway\, Lake Lure\, NC \nDetails and directions will be sent to all guests.
