DESCRIPTION:Come experience the flavorful food and delightful wines of the south of France at the lovely Biltmore Lake home of BA and Gary Schenk. Provencal cuisine is famous for its powerful flavors and simple\, farm-to-table ingredients.  Provence’s warm\, Mediterranean climate influences its cuisine:  abundant seafood\, fresh produce\, and aromatic herbs.   Your hosts have planned a delectable dinner of food paired with the perfect wines. Andy Hale\, from Metro Wines and the Asheville School of Wines\, will be there to describe the wines accompanying each course\, tell us some stories about French wine making\, and answer your questions. Be prepared for an evening of very special French cuisine and wines\, and a great time with friends.  \nEnjoy l’apertif (small pre-dinner bites to the French) with our first wine on the porch amidst the trees and birds of Biltmore Lake.  From here we move to the dining room to enjoy dinner and Andy’s extensive knowledge of wine making and its history.  Did you know that in some regions vintners are not allowed to water their grapes? Or that grape pips that pre-date the Greek and Roman inhabitants have been found throughout France?   \nOur second dinner course is l’entrée (we call this course an appetizer). This will be followed by our third course\, le plat principal\, filets de poisson Provencal (sauteed cod filets with olives and a tomato sauce)\, served with fresh seasonal root vegetables and salad niçoise. Le fromage (a selection of cheeses) follows\, as is customary in France. DESCRIPTION:We are so fortunate to present Jason Posnock as our speaker at the October 20 Guild program.  We know Jason as the concertmaster of the Asheville Symphony\, and it will be a pleasure to meet with him and enjoy his artistry and skill on the violin in a smaller setting. \nJoin us on Thursday\, October 20 at 10:00 am in the symphony office at 27 College Place\, Asheville\, 28801.  Bring your friends!   \nViolinist Jason Posnock enjoys a versatile musical career both in the United States and internationally. He has performed regularly in such prominent American ensembles as the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, and has accompanied them on tours to Europe\, South America\, the Far East and New York’s Carnegie Hall. Mr. Posnock is also an active chamber musician and recitalist\, having appeared in venues throughout the United States\, England\, Puerto Rico\, and India.  \nOriginally from New Jersey\, Mr. Posnock began taking violin lessons at the age of four. His early teachers included famed pedagogue Samuel Applebaum\, and David Arben\, Associate Concertmaster (retired) of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He attended Princeton University\, graduating with honors in 1994\, and went on to earn his ARCM(PG) from the Royal College of Music\, London\, where he studied with Felix Andrievsky. He continued his studies with Yumi Scott\, member of the Philadelphia Orchestra\, before completing the Performance Residency Program at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh as a student of Andrés Cárdenes\, Concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.  \nConcertmaster of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra since 2007\, Mr. Posnock has previously held the positions of Concertmaster of the Clarksburg (WV) Symphony Orchestra and Concertmaster of the McKeesport (PA) Symphony Orchestra.  \nIn addition to his performance schedule\, Mr. Posnock has devoted much of his time to teaching and working with young musicians\, serving on the faculty of the Brevard Music Center\, as Artist Lecturer in Violin at Carnegie Mellon University\, conductor of the Intrada Strings preparatory orchestra\, and maintaining a busy teaching studio. Presently Mr. Posnock resides with his family in Brevard\, NC\, serves on the faculty of Brevard College\, and is the Vice President & Chief Artistic Officer at the Brevard Music Center

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a delightful evening with your Symphony friends to celebrate the new Musical Feast season. \nWe are happy to once again offer you a chance to get to know Daniel and Caroline Crupi.  They have been part of the Symphony family for a little over a year\, and we are delighted that they are here. \nTwo of Daniel’s many interests include mixology and bourbon collecting.  With a collection of more than 80 unique bottles of bourbon(!!) gathered from across the United States\, as well as a passion for fusing interesting flavor profiles through cocktail curation\, Daniel will share some intriguing recipes and create for us some of his favorite cocktails – including some inventions of his own! \nSpend a fun evening learning about and sampling his spirited creations and feasting on hors d’oeuvres at the lovely Biltmore Forest home of Doris and Ralph Loomis.  \nYou don’t want to miss this exciting event!!

DESCRIPTION:You don’t want to miss this discussion by Evan Baker\, November 17th\, 10:00am\, ASO Conference Room.  As a scholar specializing in the history of opera\, he is the perfect speaker when the ASO will perform “Night at the Opera” on Saturday evening. \nEvan Baker (PhD\, 1993\, New York University) is an independent scholar specializing in the history of opera and theatrical production and staging\, theatre architecture and technology\, and opera iconography. His most recent publication\, From the Score to the Stage: An Illustrated History of Continental Opera Production and Staging (2013\, University of Chicago Press) was recognized in 2014 by the Association of American Publishers as the best publication in Music and the Performing Arts.  Baker has lectured at numerous universities in the United States and Europe\, and worked for many years in opera houses as well.

We will gather to dine and continue to explore Great Italian Opera from our collective experiences\, our favorite composers\, operas and singers with excerpts from the genre playing in the background. A family style dinner: Appetizers of herbs with olives\, truffle-honeyed Parmesan cheese and prosciutto; Antipasti medley; Main course of Italian meatballs in “gravy” and/or Pasta Nerano\, fettuccini-zucchini pasta (homage to the south\, Bellini and the Amalfi coastal town of Nerano); Dessert of cannoli and tiramisu along with Italian red and white wines.
