I wanted to reach out to all the symphony guild members with a personal invitation to Mosaic Realty’s Downtown Art Walk on Thursday May 18\, 5:00-8:00 p.m. I’ll be hosting at the Blue Spiral with three of my wonderful Mosaic colleagues. The Blue Spiral has chosen the Asheville Symphony\, Music in the Schools Program as their non-profit. Guild Member\, Sue Luther\, will be on hand to sell raffle tickets for a fabulous music-related raffle and there will be an Asheville Symphony String Trio performing.\nHere are all the details: Twelve downtown Asheville galleries are joining with Mosaic Realty to create a unique community art walk and benefit. This fundraiser is free and open to the public. Each gallery will highlight a different local nonprofit organization. There will be lite fare and beverages as well as the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win exciting prizes\, with all proceeds going to the highlighted organization. SUMMARY:Beaver Lake Birding and Brunch
DESCRIPTION:Our local birds will be wearing their brightest breeding plumage and using their best courtship songs to attract a mate at the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary in late April – a perfect time to visit.  Join us for a Spring birding delight as we walk around the Sanctuary with 2 past-presidents of the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter (Tom Tribble and Nancy Casey) and enjoy the birds’ musical melodies. More than 200 species use the Sanctuary\, and almost 50 species actually nest within the Sanctuary. Spring is also a wonderful time to see migrating birds passing through as they return north from their Winter feeding grounds in Central and South America. \n26 years ago the wetlands at the southeast end of Beaver Lake were slated for development\, but luckily our local Audubon Society chapter\, Blue Ridge Audubon\, raised $400\,000 to buy the 8 acre wetlands to preserve this habitat for the birds and other animals\, including us! It’s a wonderful wildlife resource for our city. \n After our walk we will head over to Thom’s Estate\, across the road\, and have a delicious champagne brunch in the Pavilion. \n(Rain date April 26th).

DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand – a guided hike with wildflower enthusiasts Marilyn and Lou!  We will meet at the Folk Arts Center and shuttle folks to the trailhead.  Our hike will follow Craven Gap Trail south toward the Folk Arts Center.  This is an easy to moderate trail and the hike will be about 2 miles and take approximately 2 hours. The trail will have a spectacular display of Trilliums and other wild flowers.  Marilyn Kolton and Lou will lead the hike.  A picnic lunch will be served at the Folk Arts Center following the hike.  You don’t want to miss this popular Spring event. \n(Rain date April 21st).

DESCRIPTION:“Taming the Wild English Horn (and How I Accidentally Learned to Love It).”\nOur April program is a special treat. When I asked Darko what instrument is highlighted in the Saturday night Masterworks program\, he instantly said “English horn!” Our speaker will be Cara Jenkins\, who plays both oboe and English horn and will be sharing her expertise with us. Her two daughters are also enjoying their music education and will join their Mom in a piece or two. As you can see from the photo\, we will get an early introduction to the banjo-Bela Fleck\, here we come! \nOboist Cara Mia Jenkins has built a long\, successful career investing herself equally in performing and educating the next generation of young musicians. As a performer\, she has been a member of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra for eighteen years and has performed regularly with other regional orchestras. With a passion for education\, Ms. Jenkins formerly served as the Education Coordinator for the ASO and spent the majority of her time building the Asheville Symphony Youth Orchestra from the ground up. Her private oboe studio boasts of several budding oboists that have gone on to become accomplished musicians and have attended some of top music schools. Ms. Jenkins’ love for music started at an early age when her grandmother would play piano with her on her lap. She spent several summers studying piano and chamber music at the San Francisco Conservatory’s Summer Music West where she eventually began studying oboe and English horn. Her greatest joy has been building a beautiful life here in the Blue Ridge Mountains with her husband Blair and daughters Mia and Hannah whom she has passed her love of music to.
