Join your hosts for lunch and a playful afternoon at the beautifully restored 1902 Southern Railway Depot in Hendersonville, NC, home of the Apple Valley Model Railroad Club. The fun for the day is watching the Apple Valley Model Railroad Club’s nine trains travel around the Club’s 1800 square-foot train layout. The model is assembled in the HO scale, the most popular scale for model trains in the world.
The Club members have meticulously constructed beautiful structures and scenery, mostly by hand, for the layout. It measures 18’ x 100’ and contains over 2000 feet of track and 225 switches. The Apple Valley Club is the largest model railroad club in Western North Carolina.
Many composers loved trains and incorporated them in their music. Arthur Honegger, Leonard Bernstein, and Hans Christian Lumbye were just a few. Antonin Dvorak was probably the biggest train enthusiast of any composer. Our guide, Apple Valley Club member and Symphony Guild member Maurice Stone, will discuss Dvorak’s fascination with trains and how it influenced his music.
Enjoy a delicious lunch and drinks.. After lunch, those who would like to become an “engineer-for-a-day,” may take a turn controlling your own train, blowing the whistle, ringing the bell, and having a blast! Enjoy one of the top tourist destinations in Western North Carolina!
