The Legacy of Wilma Dykeman

Your hosts welcome you to a special Sunday afternoon gathering highlighting the legacy of Asheville’s own Wilma Dykeman, author, historian, educator, journalist and environmental advocate – a true Renaissance woman. Her focused passions led to the championing of causes that remain relevant today – water pollution, the rights of women, her untiring devotion to the power of place, and her responsibility in preserving the integrity and culture of Appalachia.

Wilma’s son, James Stokley, will present a film documenting his mother’s incredible life and career. James will also treat the group to a lively discussion about his late mother’s book “Family of Earth”, discovered after her death in 2006.

Robin Gaiser, a resident of Beaverdam, noted musician and author will entertain, appropriately, on the Appalachian dulcimer (or perhaps one of the other early folk instruments on which she is virtuosic.)

So join us for hors d’oeuvres, wine, coffee and sumptuous desserts at this unique Musical Feast. You will leave with a copy of “Family of Earth” and an understanding of the ideas which shaped a young Wilma Dykeman’s curiosity!
